Using the Mouse Properly

(Step-by-Step Instructions for Seniors)

🖱 What Is the Mouse?

The mouse is the small device you move with your hand to control the arrow (pointer) on your screen.

When you move the mouse on your desk, the arrow moves on the screen.

Think of it like a remote control for your computer.

🖐 How to Hold the Mouse

  • Rest your hand gently on top.
  • Your index finger rests on the left button.
  • Your middle finger rests on the right button.
  • Move the mouse slowly and gently.

Do not grip it tightly.

👆 The Three Most Important Mouse Actions

There are only three things you really need to know:

1️⃣ Single Click
2️⃣ Double Click
3️⃣ Right Click

Let’s go through each one.

1️⃣ Single Click

Press the left button once.

This is used to:

  • Select something
  • Press a button
  • Choose a menu item

Example:
Click the Start button once.

2️⃣ Double Click

Press the left button twice quickly.

This is used to:

  • Open programs
  • Open folders
  • Open files

Important:
Two quick clicks — not too slow.

If it opens and closes quickly, don’t worry. Just try again.

3️⃣ Right Click

Press the right button once.

This shows a small menu with more options.

Example:

  • Rename a file
  • Delete something
  • See properties

Right-click does not open things — it gives you choices.

🎯 Moving the Pointer Accurately

If your pointer moves too fast:

  1. Click Start.
  2. Type Mouse Settings.
  3. Adjust the pointer speed slider.

Slower is usually easier for beginners.

🖱 What If You Have Trouble Double Clicking?

If double-clicking is difficult:

You can change your settings so a single click opens items.

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Click the three dots at the top.
  3. Choose Options.
  4. Select “Single-click to open an item.”

This can make things much easier.

🧹 Cleaning Your Mouse

If your mouse skips or moves strangely:

  • Wipe the bottom with a soft cloth.
  • Make sure nothing blocks the small light underneath.

If it uses batteries, replace them if movement is weak.

💡 Confidence Tip for Seniors

You cannot break your computer with the mouse.

If something opens by mistake:

  • Click the X in the top right corner to close it.

That’s all.

Practice makes it natural.
