Changing the Desktop Background in Windows 11

(Step-by-Step Instructions for Seniors)

🖼 What Is the Desktop Background?

Your desktop background is the picture behind your icons.

It might be:

  • A blue Windows image
  • A nature photo
  • A personal family picture

Changing it does NOT affect how your computer works.

It only changes how it looks.

🟦 Method 1: Change Background from Settings

Step 1

Right-click in a blank area on your desktop.

Step 2

Click Personalize.

Step 3

Click Background.

Step 4

Under “Personalize your background,” choose:

  • Picture (single image)
  • Slideshow (multiple rotating pictures)
  • Solid color

Most seniors prefer “Picture.”

Step 5

Click Browse photos.

Choose a picture from your:

  • Pictures folder
  • Family photo folder

Click Choose picture.

Your background will change immediately.

🟦 Method 2: Set a Picture Directly

If you already see a photo in File Explorer:

  1. Right-click the photo.
  2. Click Set as desktop background.

Done.

🟦 Using a Slideshow (Optional)

If you want rotating photos:

  1. Go to Settings → Personalization → Background.
  2. Choose Slideshow.
  3. Select a folder of photos.
  4. Choose how often pictures change.

Your desktop will cycle through them automatically.

⚠ If Icons Are Hard to See

If your background makes icons hard to read:

Choose:

  • A lighter image
  • A simple solid color

Avoid very busy photos.
