Using the Snipping Tool in Windows 11

(Step-by-Step Instructions for Seniors)

✂️ What Is the Snipping Tool?

The Snipping Tool lets you take a picture of your screen.

This is helpful if you want to:

  • Save a receipt
  • Capture an error message
  • Share something with family
  • Show tech support what you see

It takes a “snapshot” of part of your screen.

🟦 The Quickest Way to Use It

Step 1

Press:

Windows key + Shift + S

Your screen will dim slightly.

A small menu will appear at the top.

Step 2

Click and drag your mouse over the area you want to capture.

Release the mouse.

The image is copied automatically.

Step 3

A small notification will appear in the lower-right corner.

Click it.

The Snipping Tool window opens.

Step 4

Click Save (floppy disk icon).

Choose where to save it:

  • Pictures folder (recommended)

Click Save.

🟦 Opening the Snipping Tool Manually

If you prefer:

  1. Click Start.
  2. Type Snipping Tool.
  3. Click it.
  4. Click New.
  5. Select the area to capture.

📂 Where Are Snips Saved?

If you save them manually, choose:

Pictures → Screenshots (or your chosen folder)

If you don’t save it, it may not stay permanently.

Always click Save.

🖊 Editing the Screenshot

Inside the Snipping Tool, you can:

  • Draw on the image
  • Highlight text
  • Crop it

This is helpful if showing someone exactly what you mean.

📎 Sending a Screenshot in Email

After saving:

  1. Open your email.
  2. Click the paperclip (Attach).
  3. Choose the saved screenshot.
  4. Send it.

This is very useful when asking for help.

💡 Confidence Tip for Seniors

The Snipping Tool is one of the most helpful tools in Windows.

It lets you “show” instead of trying to explain.

If something looks confusing on your screen:

Take a screenshot.

That’s often the easiest solution.
