(Step-by-Step Instructions for Seniors)
⌨ What Is the Keyboard?
The keyboard is the flat board with letters and numbers.
It lets you:
- Type messages
- Write emails
- Search the internet
- Enter passwords
Think of it like a typewriter connected to your computer.
🔤 The Main Parts of the Keyboard
You don’t need to learn every key.
Focus on the most important ones.
1️⃣ Letter Keys (A–Z)
Used for typing words.
2️⃣ Number Keys (0–9)
Used for typing numbers and passwords.
3️⃣ The Space Bar
The long key at the bottom.
Press it once to create a space between words.
4️⃣ The Enter Key
Usually on the right side.
Press Enter to:
- Start a new line
- Send a form
- Confirm something
5️⃣ The Backspace Key
Located above the Enter key.
Press it to delete letters one at a time (backwards).
If you make a mistake, just press Backspace.
6️⃣ The Shift Key
Used for:
- Capital letters
- Symbols like ! @ # $
To make a capital letter:
- Hold Shift.
- Press the letter.
- Let go.
7️⃣ The Caps Lock Key
Caps Lock turns on ALL CAPITAL LETTERS.
Press it once to turn on.
Press it again to turn off.
If everything is typing in capital letters, Caps Lock may be on.
✏ How to Practice Typing
Open:
- Notepad
- Word
- Or an email draft
Start by typing simple sentences like:
“My name is ____.”
“Today is ____.”
Go slowly. Accuracy is more important than speed.
🔎 What Is the Cursor?
When you type, you will see a blinking vertical line.
That is called the cursor.
It shows where your next letter will appear.
If letters appear in the wrong place:
- Click your mouse where you want to type.
- The cursor will move there.
🔐 Typing Passwords
Passwords are case-sensitive.
That means:
- “Dog123” is different from “dog123”
Be careful with:
- Capital letters
- Numbers
- Symbols
If the password doesn’t work, check Caps Lock first.
💡 Confidence Tip for Seniors
Everyone types slowly at first.
You cannot damage your computer by typing.
Mistakes are normal — that’s why we have the Backspace key.
With practice, your fingers will begin to remember where the letters are.
